Equity Statement

When we talk about health equity, we mean having a society that supports the health of all of us, regardless of who we are, where we are from, and the opportunities that are or are not available to us.

We recognize the continuing history of structural racism has led to health inequities that are avoidable, unjust, and deadly. We envision a South Carolina where all people feel safe, have a sense of belonging, and have access to what they need to achieve their fullest potential. As individuals and organizations, we are devoted to using our power to decentralize power and grow equity through the redesign of policies and systems, so our collective health and economic well-being flourish.

VALUES STATEMENT

We understand that we cannot address the social determinants of health without understanding, acknowledging and addressing the causes and aftereffects of systemic racism on health outcomes.

We endeavor to use this statement to operationalize our commitment to rebuilding structures that promote health equity now and in future iterations of this work. With this commitment in mind, we pledge to adhere to the following Values.

  • Health encompasses the whole person—not just physical health, but also mental, financial, and social well-being.
  • Policies and systems belong to and are shaped by the communities they serve.
  • For transformation to occur, we must include not just those who affect policies and systems but also those who are affected by them.
  • We value dialogue that is authentic and open among individuals, communities, social care agencies, and healthcare services.
  • We strive to tell the truths about inequities.
  • We believe accountability is mutual and reciprocal and is the glue that holds good interactions and transactions together.
  • We strive to build the trust needed among communities, organizations, and agencies to reach success.
